India BIS vs Korea KC: Certification Guide for Emerging Markets

Most brands know about CE, FCC, and UL. But if you're expanding into India or South Korea, you'll need local certifications: BIS for India and KC for Korea. Both are mandatory, both have specific testing requirements, and both take time. Here's what you need to know.
India: BIS Certification
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) operates the Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) for electronic products. Chargers fall under IS 13252 (Part 1):2010, which covers safety requirements for IT equipment.
BIS requires product testing at a BIS-recognized lab in India, followed by registration of the manufacturer and importer. The process typically takes 8-12 weeks. Each factory location and each product variant needs separate registration, which can complicate multi-SKU launches.
South Korea: KC Certification
KC (Korea Certification) is mandatory for electrical products sold in South Korea. Chargers are subject to both safety standards (under the Electrical Appliances Safety Control Act) and EMC requirements.
KC testing must be performed at a KOLAS-accredited lab in Korea. The certificate is issued to a specific Korean importer or local representative, meaning foreign brands typically need a local partner. Lead time is usually 6-10 weeks.
Key Differences from CE/FCC
Unlike CE, which is largely self-declared, BIS and KC require registration with government-recognized bodies. Unlike FCC, which focuses on EMC, KC has both safety and EMC components. And unlike UL, which is voluntary in the US, BIS and KC are legally mandatory.
